In the vein of romantic impressionism, Hatfield shows the viewer that beauty can arise from any moment: a family reunion, a young boy playing on the beach, or the warmth of the sun touching a mother and her child. Hatfield describes himself as being preoccupied with the effect of light on form. The extremely personal degree to which he embraces the effect of light is evident in his paintings, and often why the beach is a frequent setting for his paintings.
